Virtual training in "Local Governance and Public Management focused on Human Development in the health sector " Guatemala

In the early days of July, two virtual courses on "Local Governance and Public Management focused on human development in the health sector" were initiated. These courses corresponded to the third and fourth editions of the Virtual Training Program under the Project in Management and Governance, which is supported by UNDP Guatemala in partnership with the UNDP Virtual School as part of the strategy to strengthen the public health sector, implemented by the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare (MSPAS).

Since 1997, the MSPAS implemented the Coverage Enhancement Program - PEC as part of a strategy to meet the basic health needs of vulnerable communities without access to traditional health. In this process, the PEC identified the need to strengthen and train health managers of the Ministry in matters of health governance. This was the reason to launch the Virtual Training Program, aiming for the participants to develop planning, monitoring and evaluating skills in order to improve the health services delivering.

The face to face session took place in the city of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. It was attended by 75 health managers and during the event the students were familiarized with the blended learning methodology and with the main contents of the course.

The Program plans to carry out 10 editions of the virtual training between 2011/2012 in order to train 400 managers working within the health sector in Guatemala. The first two editions have already finished, 82 students were enrolled of whom 59 approved the course.
