Presentation

For UNDP gender equality means equal rights for men and women. Historically, a vast majority of countries in Latin America have sustained social, cultural, economic or political practices that maintain gender inequality. Today, women in the region do not enjoy the same opportunities or liberties as men.

This course offers a critical reading of gender inequality from a HD perspective, providing an analysis of measurement indices related to gender and proposes tools of action for strategic actors in the region from a gender perspective.

Course Structure

The course is structured to be completed in 12 weeks and this includes 4 subject topics and 2 weeks for course introduction and closing. The introduction includes a course summary, and the closing unit invites participants to assess the course according to the below structure:

Unit 0	Introduction to the Virtual School System, the course and its context: Presentation and introduction to the School, course and classmates Understanding and using the virtual classroom Understanding and organization of learning resources
Unit 1	Human Development as a paradigm for equality; Contributions from a gender perspective HD principles and characteristics Gender inequality How has the concept of women, gender and development evolved Contribution of international tools to reach gender equality Gender and HD: meeting points and challenges
Unit 2	Development measurement from a gender perspective Gender-related Development Index (GDI) Gender empowerment measure (GEM) The scope and limitation of these indices Contributions from the gender perspective
Unit 3	Contemporary debates about gender and human development Macroeconomics, gender and inequalities Linking the concept of human development, gender inequality and poverty Gender, sustainability and environment Gender, democracy and political participation Gender and human rights Cultural freedom and gender equality Gender and the MDGs
Unit 4	Proposals for action from a gender perspective Strategies to accelerate change from a gender perspective using public policies Basic tools for development
Closing Unit	Evaluation
